We all have our own definition of leadership. Each one of us responds to different kinds of leadership, and what would work for one person may not work for the other. But leadership, in all its forms is such an important thing. It creates order and get everyone moving. Regardless of your definition of leadership, I believe that leadership can be summed up with this quote by John Quincy Adams that says, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
Overtime, our beliefs and philosophies about leadership will change. As for me, through research and experience, I have learned essential qualities that leaders must possess in order to bring out the best in their employees. One of the most important things I have learned about leadership is that, it isn’t just about establishing authority. It is being that person people will look up to because at one point in their life, that person has influenced them to do something about their life. Persuading others to follow is probably the hardest thing to do as a leader if you do not have set a good example for them. It’s going to take a lot more convincing if they don’t see in you the traits they look for the right leader. A leader should be able to handle situations in a way where everyone would still be able to function in an orderly and positive manner. Being able to handle a situation well will make a lasting impression and would greatly make a positive impact on the people you are leading. This would remind them to always handle things in a professional and respectable way.
Leadership is also about communication. When there is communication, a relationship is formed. It would be easy to persuade people to follow when you have a good relationship with them. It is important to be the kind of leader who knows what to say in situations where people you lead are confused and don’t know what to do. But at the same time, the kind of leader that listens to what they have to say. Communication works both ways. They learn from you and you get to learn from them as well. In order for them to become more, they need someone they can learn from. They need to feel that there is someone who will support them no matter what. Of course, employers want loyalty from their employees but it can only be given when there’s a bond that’s built on honesty and integrity.
Leadership shouldn’t be about making sure everybody is afraid of you. It is making sure that there’s respect above all things. For you to inspire them to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you must exhibit the very person they will want to be in the future.
